Updated: Dec 15, 2023

What is Hypertension

Hypertension, or High Blood Pressure, is a common condition that occurs when the force of the blood against the artery walls is too high, putting extra stain on the heart. This raises risks of stroke, heart attack and can harm kidneys.

Factors contributing to the development of High blood Pressure include genetics, poor diet, lack of physical activities, medical conditions such as kidney disease and diabetes, hormonal imbalances, certain medication.

It is vital for someone with any of these factors to engage with a healthcare professional and create a treatment plan that will lower blood pressure and lessen the risk of complications.

Massage to muscles and soft tissues increases blood flow, improve blood circulation and reduce the risk of blood clots.

Massage Therapy reduces tension and helps muscle relaxation which can enhance general blood flow and prevents blood vessel constriction.

Massage Therapy can help to improve the health of the arteries and veins and promote overall cardiovascular health.

Massage Therapy promotes relaxation and relieve pain

While there are several medications and lifestyle changes that can be used to manage hypertension, recent researches indicate that massage therapy may also be a useful therapeutic option.

Massage Therapy has been shown to relax muscles, reduce tension, which can improve overall blood flow and help prevent constriction of blood vessels.( Shaw et al , 2010).

Another study found that regular massage therapy over several weeks was effective at reducing blood pressure and improving overall cardiovascular health in patients with hypertension , and another study confirmed these results adding that regular massage therapy significantly reduced both systolic and diastolic blood pressure.( Lau et al, 2012)

Massage Therapy can reduce levels of the stress hormone Cortisol. Cortisol is a hormone produced by the adrenal glands in response to stress. Elevated levels of cortisol have been linked to the development of hypertension. The mechanism behind the ability of massage therapy to reduce cortisol level may include the induction of the relaxation response which can help to reduce the body stress response.( Muller et al 2007), (lau et al 2012).

Swedish massage found to stimulate the production of Endorphins. Endorphins are natural chemicals produced by the brain that act as painkillers and can help reduce stress and anxiety . The relaxation and stress reducing effect of the endorphins may help lower blood pressure in some individuals. ( field et al 2005)

A 2014 study showed that a 10mn swedish back massage given twice a week over 6 weeks led to a decrease in blood pressure.

Massage Therapy improves Sleep Quality

Poor sleep quality has been linked to an increase risk of developing hypertension and cardio vascular complications.

One way in which massage therapy may help reduce blood pressure is through its ability to improve sleep quality.

A number of studies have demonstrated the effectiveness of massage therapy in improving sleep quality. It was found that massage therapy was effective in reducing levels of stress hormone Cortisol, which has been linked to poor sleep quality and increased risk of hypertension. ( lau et al 2012 & Lee et al 2019),

Additionally, Massage Therapy may not be safe during pregnancy. Even though massage therapy has been shown to reduce pregnancy-related discomfort, such as back pain and swelling and improve sleep, it is important to consult with a healthcare provider and a trained massage therapist before receiving massage during pregnancy.

A 2018 trial of a small number of women with pre-hypertension found that the blood-pressure-lowering effects of a 10-15 minute massage sometimes lasted about 72 hours after the massage. However, those effects didn't seem to last when the researchers checked the blood pressure readings of the participants two weeks later.
